I almost always begin the song writing process with a simple chord progression, guitar riff, or melody. When I started thinking about "The Wizard of Oz", the themes that rushed to mind were that of The Wizard, the Wicked Witch of West, The land of Oz, and traveling down a yellow brick road. Also, Adam Levy's lyrics really stuck in my head so I branched off of that a bit too. In developing the verse and chorus, I played the music over and over and simply emptied my mind around the basic themes ... thinking of what they mean, and how they relate to life in general. The lyrics I came up with are listed as follows ... hope you enjoy it!
verse 1:
The man behind the curtain ...
tells you what to think
The man behind the curtain ...
shows you what you see
The man behind the curtain ...
is blind to you
The man behind the curtain ...
doesn't know the truth
chorus:
Far, far away from home ...
there's no one like you ... but you're not alone ....
Far, far away from home ...
down that yellow brick road ... not to far to go
Little dorothy, just click your heels ...
Fly ........... all the way home
bridge (Adam's Lyrics):
From the ends of the earth to your own back yard,
Mouth and mind drink all but won't fill an empty heart.
It's all within -- energy and matter, namaste and ohm,
Myriad formulas, nostrums and prayer -- all roads lead home.
verse 2:
The woman chasing you ...
has an empty heart
The woman chasing you ...
was bad from the start
The woman chasing you ...
haunts you night and day
The woman chasing you ...
simply melts away
